So… you may be asking yourself, what is chiropractic care? Perhaps the most notable area of expertise that chiropractors treat is known as subluxation. Subluxation is a term used when one or more vertebrae are moved out of position, also referred to as vertebral dislocation.
When subluxation has been diagnosed, it is necessary for a chiropractor to properly treat the injury by realigning the bones to their proper position. Often, as a chiropractor is adjusting your bone alignment, you may hear a “cracking” noise. This is merely the sound that accompanies the release of trapped gas. At times, patients may experience slight discomfort when having a realignment, this however, is mainly caused by surrounding muscle spasms due to unfamiliar exercise.
There are five components that will often lead to vertebrae subluxation complex (VSC):

Bone Component – This occurs when the vertebrae moves out of position, doesn’t move properly, or degenerates due to age. Symptoms of bone component VSC are often felt when the spaces between the vertebrae narrow, causing pain from impingement and interference with nerves.
Muscular Component – The muscles that hold the vertebrae in place are controlled by nerves. When muscular component VSC occurs, irritated nerves can force the muscle to spasm, which often causes severe pain and further misplacement of the vertebrae.
Nervous Component – When the natural flow of energy along the vertebrae nerve fibers is disrupted, the surrounding tissues will begin to experience distorted signals coming to and from the brain. This disruption can have severe consequences leading to the body’s organs if left untreated over time.
Soft Tissue Component – This will occur when the either the tendons, blood supply, or ligaments that surround the injured vertebrae influence the alignment. An excessive tug, pull, or squee of the connective tissue will cause soft tissue component VSC.
Chemical Component – When a change in the body’s chemistry occurs due to subluxation, a class of pro-inflammatory chemicals known as kinins is released, causing additional pain and inflammation to surrounding muscle and tissue of the damaged vertebrae.
